Building the New City

when we produce new territories in the city, are we building castles in the air? gilding the rotten fruit? casting diamonds into a sea of decrepitude?

is this the nature of production, a desperate gamble that can never pay off for long? bullshit.

there is a hopelessness in the air. but this is not a zero-sum game. a new neighborhood is not always an appropriation, one population's gain at the expense of another. "gentrification" is not the sole model of development.

gen x dashed itself on an insuperable limit of production, but it was an internal limit. there can be no unitary conciousness, no forever-elimination of false thinking. this limits far we can go with what there is already, how evenly the world can be shared out. so we must shift the game -- fight not to end the human struggle, but to produce a greater field on which the struggle can play out.

there is no end to struggle, only an end to this crushing desperation.
