China Five: Shanghai 1

click for large version

That was our first view of Shanghai -- from the old city viewing Pudong. Pudong is the part of Shanghai east of the Huangpu river (pudong means "east of Huangpu"), which, under the aegis of the "new economic zone" in 1990, has sprouted more than 100 skyscrapers.

More on the Pudong later.

Back in the old city (mostly constructed during the colonial era), we made our way to our hotel.

The Metropole

The old city has electrical wires thick overhead. That, and the style of the buildings, gives it a wonderful noir feel.

Then we went to sleep.
