Blackout from space...

Too fucking cool...

    Update:

    ...really. After gobbling it up, I looked a little further in my google search and found out that the above photo is a hoax. The clues: there is no "GeoStar" satellite, satellites would probably give time using Greenwich Mean Time, the blacked out area is too dark (darker than the ocean), too complete (it was not a completely cloudless night), and not really the right shape. It is surmised that it was taken from this NASA composite photograph of the entire globe at night, which is a really cool photo in it's own right. Mol points out: look at the Nile! Look at North vs. South Korea! I say: look at Japan!

    Here is a real more plausible before and after satellite photo of the eastern seaboard:
