one third of a nation


I awoke this morning 
with FDR ‘s phrase
ringing 
 in my head 

“ one third of a nation 
ill housed ill fed ill clad ”

biblical sounding
isn’t it 

mighty godly and grand 

I hear
a prophetic wrath
mobilizing
beyond  the horizon 

“ one third of a nation ”

the last great  patrician
his self loving  lilt 
 heavy beyond baring 
with the imminence 
  of  its faultless
indignation 

surely 
a righteous thunder bolt
awaits any such   nation 
that will not act 
and act soon
